What are the Benefits of Contact Lenses?

You likely are already aware of the many difference between eyeglasses and contact lenses. While eyeglasses have a much longer history than contact lenses, a majority of people prefer to use contact lenses. Recently, contacts have seen in increase in popularity, making them a desirable alternative to donning inconvenient eyeglasses.

IMG_7928If you make a comparison between glasses and contacts, you’ll notice a number of benefits from contact lenses. First of all, the field of vision is different. While glasses give you excellent vision in front of your face, they fail to provide you with good peripheral vision. Alternately, contact lenses can give you great vision in every direction, including the sides of your range of vision. With contact, you’re not limited to looking only right in front of you, since contact lenses allow you to look in any direction.

One other large difference is the fact that eyeglasses can weigh down uncomfortably on your face, nose and ears. You’ll also find that glasses constantly need to be adjusted and tightened. Contacts are weightless, and you never need to tighten, adjust or fix them as you would with glasses – which can be an annoying process.

You’ll also have to put up with fog on your eyeglass lenses, and can be a hindrance if you play any kind of sports. If you use contact lenses, you can do almost any activity without worrying about them getting damage. They’re not subject to gravity when you run, so they won’t slide around on your face and limit your activities unnecessarily.

While you can see the many obvious differences, eyeglasses and contact lenses also have some similarities. You should be very cautious and gentle when handling either. Every day, you’ll likely need to delicately clean your eyeglasses. You also need to clean contact lenses, both before they are put in, and they also need to be stored in a solution when not in use. Some people experience dry eyes when using contacts, so you might find yourself using eyedrops periodically to make the lenses more comfortable for you.

You can correct an astigmatism using contact lenses and eyeglasses, so either are a suitable solution to that visual issue. ‘Astigmatism’ means that your cornea is irregularly shaped, and thus hinders your vision. It is a problem that is common as one ages, but many people mistakenly believe that contact lenses cannot be used to compensate for this problem.

Both eyeglasses and contact lenses are generally fairly affordable. Given the likelihood that you’ll need glasses or contact lenses forever, it’s wise to make the proper investment in whichever you choose to use. As time passes, they’ll pay for themselves with the way they improve your quality of life.

With any decision that you make, be sure that you take the right steps to obtain the vision that you should have. It’s rare to have perfect vision, so if you’re in need of some correction for your eyes, eyeglasses or contact lenses are the solution for you. You will also need to make sure you know how to care for contact lenses. You can once again pursue the things you love if poor vision has prevented you from enjoying them, so ask your eye doctor about eyeglasses or contact lenses.
